LAGOON FRIENDLY LAWNS
Protecting the Indian River Lagoon starts right in your backyard! Keep Indian River Beautiful’s
Lagoon Friendly Lawns program is an easy way to reduce your individual nutrient runoff
which every lawn owner creates.
Excess nutrients and deteriorating plant material from yards build up in the Lagoon and contribute to the unhealthy level of algae blooms seen in recent years. Certain types of algae can cause fish kills,
water toxicity and lesions on both animals and humans.
The Indian River Lagoon is one of the most biologically diverse estuaries in North America, providing a home for more than 4,000 species and contributing $7 billion per year to our local economy. Unfortunately, nutrient pollution from sources like lawn fertilizer and runoff from residential areas provide fuel to the large scale algal blooms that plague Florida ecosystems.
To become a Lagoon Friendly Lawn, all it takes is a few simple and easy steps. The first level (Bronze) of the program is completely free. An FIT Research Study shows that the average Bronze Level home reduces their nitrogen output to the Lagoon by over 50%!
Approved applications prior to January 7th, 2020 will be candidates considered for a new award at our
2020 Environmental Awards Ceremony.
The Lagoon Friendly Lawn Program is a "Lead by Example" program. The idea is to get recognition for your efforts to be Lagoon Friendly and in turn, inspire someone else to do the same.
Our inspiration was Keep Brevard Beautiful who started this program in 2015.
